For my final project in my Advanced Typography Class, I was challenged to design a custom typeface from the ground up. Drawing inspiration from American Traditional tattoo lettering and Art Deco typography, I aimed to create a typeface that felt bold, nostalgic, and distinctly stylized.
The design process was extensive and iterative, involving multiple rounds of critique and refinement. Each stage pushed me to consider the balance of form, function, and personality within the letterforms.
My focus was on developing strong contrast between the thickest and thinnest strokes, creating visual rhythm and drama while maintaining legibility. I also introduced serifs with intention, placing them where they would enhance the elegance and structure of each letter without overwhelming the design.
The result is a typeface that pays homage to vintage Americana while offering a fresh and contemporary edge. It reflects not only my aesthetic sensibilities but also my growth in typographic thinking and design precision.
